Write, Love, Breathe

There is a common phrase which tells us to: “Write what you know”.

Pretty hard for someone who considers themselves to be a perpetual student and knowing that I really *know* nothing. (YMMV)

However, if I spin the phrase a bit and tell myself: “Write what you love”. Ah-ha. THAT I can do.

Here lately what I love are Vision Boards, Cake, and long-Netflix-binge sessions on the couch. Not entirely conducive to all the big plans about how 2017 is going to change my lifestyle.

As we all do with stress, some things go right out the window. Unfortunately, those things are usually the habits we need to hold most dearly to. Basic Hygiene, Not missing the work-out that truly keeps your brain straight, the filtering of mail that helps keep out clutter and saves you work down the road. Stress and the snowball effect seem to go hand in hand.

It’s recognition of this cycle, a self-reinforcing cycle, that helps you change momentum earlier than a crash. Take the mail example from earlier.

  1. Don’t filter the mail turns into
  2. Extra pile up on the coffee table leads to
  3. Missing the potentially important stuff leads to
  4. A late bill turns into
  5. More avoidable stress

Hopefully when you recognize your signals and signs of overly stressed you can help yourself by doing one little thing.

Witches’ Words Have Power

You have heard the age old phrase, “Words Have Power!” and you’ve nodded along and went, “Of course! This is common knowledge!”

Have you ever wondered why though? Why do words hold power? Pictures, words, stones, a sachet of herbs. All of these hold power because of our intent when using them. These phrases and items energetically resonate with us.

Jewish and Christian creation stories tell of God creating the Universe through spoken word: “And God said…”

But why words? Why tools or pictures or any other physical item? Isn’t magic just power of mind to direct energy to create change?

Well yes it is. An undisciplined mind or straying concentration won’t get the job done for magic. You could create something very unintended if you aren’t careful.

However, the reason for tools and scents and appealing to the senses is so important is because it helps you to help open up and facilitate a shift in consciousness. To go from 90 miles a minute to being still and steady. In working magic, I must slow down and feel and listen. The world is constantly chattering if we only learn to hear it. The birds outside my window. The dog barking in the distance. The wind that bites with cold as I walk to my car. The sway of trees. All of it has messages.

So as I learn to listen, I learn the language and I learn to speak back. With concentrated mind and breath I send out my own message in the world.

A whisper of love.
A cheer of positivity.
A low-tone of acceptance.
I create and embody the change I wish to see in my world.

All with my words of power.

Rune Stone Study: The Beginning

Hello all!

First off, I want to thank Grove and Grotto for always having the best tools and items for my witchy needs. Supplies can be hard to find at good prices and this faery shop has it all!

Here recently, I’ve decided to expand my divination skills. Tarot was my first love and will probably be my best tool but I want to add some dimension to what I do. Those Heathens at my annual autumn camp-out have inspired me.

I picked up a very nice set of black onyx rune stones.

On the first day I picked up:

Jera!

Letter: J or Y
Word: Harvest

“Your creativity has paid off and all your plans are coming to fruition now.Your life is a hive of activity as you rush to reap the rewards of your labor. You are energized and vibrant, fully able to enjoy your success without complacency. Remember that within your harvest lies the dormant seed of the cycle to come.”

There is no reverse for this rune.

Personally I am at the end of a lot of cycles in my life. Having planted the seed of blogging and massage therapy, I have planned and worked hard to bring those dreams to fruition.

Wedding plans, spiritual plans, and more are finally reaping rewards. I give thanks to the Gods and Spirit that I have been very fortunate this year to have not only my base needs covered but so much more in blessings.

The Path is Spiral

We each walk our paths on our own. Along our journey though, we have visitors.

“There are three kinds of friends:
Friends for a reason,
Friends for a season,
and friends for a lifetime.”

These visitors can be people, animal companions, music, and art. They can be events and emotions. Ebb and flow of dreams and desires. They all come to us in time and stay for a time.

The path is winding and twisting for the most part. It can be overgrown and tough to push through. The path can also be straighter and you may glide upon it easily.

However something you notice after a time and after several experiences is that the path is a spiral. We come across our “visitors’ again. Some times physically; other times it will be mentally. The radio kicks on that song you used to dance together. An image of a dog that looks just like yours pops up on your Facebook. When packing boxes to move, a stuffed animal falls out.

All of these visitors taught you something and maybe they have stayed with you. But we revisit the path because we can look back and see our lessons. We see new situations with more experience and so the story changes this time.

We become empathetic.

We become softer.

We become more.

Lately for me, I have gone back to the beginning and seen with fresh eyes old information, old songs with familiar feeling, and scents and feelings on the winds of autumn.

I invite you to reflect on your spiraling path with me. I invite you to breathe and fulfill yourself on the truths you’ve learned and your beginning foundation. I invite you, my visitors, to show me what needs to be seen.

9 Ritual Items Commonly Found at the Dollar Store

These are wonderful ideas for the frugal Witch!

Moody Moons

1.  Herbs and Spices.  The spice section is great for picking up herbs and spices that can be used in sachets, incense blends, and mojo bags.  I’ve found:

-Garlic (protection)
-Basil (love)
-Chili Powder (used in hoodoo/voodoo)
-Oregano (marriage blessing/kitchen witchery)
-Onion Powder (protection)
-Chopped Onion(protection)

2.  Sea Salt.  Sometimes it’s coarse, and sometimes it’s finely ground.  Either way, there is usually some kind of bulk salt available for circle-casting and whatnot.

3. Candles.  Tea candles, pillar candles, jar candles.  They have them all.  Personally, I prefer the unscented white ones, which are great all-purpose candles for carving symbols in and anointing with various oils.  They are generally much cheaper at the dollar store than almost anywhere else.

4.  Seasonal decor.  I usually make a trip before any given Cross Quarter holiday for altar decorations.

5.  Incense.  Truth be told, I am not a big fan of…

Under the Harvest Moon

As we move closer and closer to the Autumn Equinox, our Moon rises closer and closer to sunset. This has given the Full Moon in September the name Harvest Moon. At this time, we are slowly losing the precious daylight we need to bring in our harvests. Fruits and grains are plentiful at this time and even more can be brought in because the half to full moon rises just when we need her.

But what makes a Harvest Moon different than most others? According to The Almanac usually, throughout the year, the Moon rises an average of about 50 minutes later each day. But near the autumnal equinox, the difference is only 30 minutes. Also, the Full Harvest Moon rises at sunset and then will rise near sunset for several nights in a row because the difference is at a yearly minimum.

Spiritually, this moon is important to us because it is all about preparation for winter. The birds fly south. Bears start their feast for hibernation and squirrels tuck away what they can. Ideally you’d check your gutters and clear them out. You would check your heating and AC and insulation. Are you prepared for harsher weather? Are you prepared for the dark half of the year? Use the remaining daylight and spectacular moonlight to clear out your clutter (Mentally, Emotionally, and Physically)  and re-frame your coming winter and coming year.

While working in your home, it is a good idea to clean and revamp your altar. Take off what no longer suits you and don’t be afraid to rearrange for what resonates with your soul. This is about what you and your family needs for survival.

This past week, I have deep cleaned my home. Things that I need have been stored. Winter clothes have been brought out and washed. Clutter and dead weight has been donated or tossed. All these nesting procedures have fulfilled my soul in preparation for Fall and Winter.

Almost, Maybe? Luna’s Veil

Good Morning! As I type this the Moon is passing over us and just barely teasing the Earth’s shadow. We :almost: had a Lunar eclipse. This happens when the Earth passes between the Sun and Moon but the shadow cast from the Earth doesn’t quite reach her.

Credit: NASA
almost eclipse

As you can see, the Moon dances with us and the Earth once more. But what does this mean for our magick and ritual practice?

Honestly, it could mean nothing! My personal interpretation is that the Moon is playful and mischievous and that is a great energy to bring to yourself this time of year. We are ending summer and beginning fall but that doesn’t mean we should lose the play aspect of summer break. This enthusiasm should carry into the new school year for youngsters and for our “harvests” for the adults.

Typically, a lunar eclipse means chaos is reigning. (I just heard all the chaos magicians cheer.) In my experience, (which can be vastly different than yours) when the Earth and Sun and Moon are in conflict so too are the energies of my magick and my daily life. The coffee pot not going off with its normal timer, the dreary, stand-still weather, and of course losing my freshly started notebook!  For me, it’s as if the Tricksters come out to play and give a lesson.

So whether you practice now or not is your path and your calling. We wish you luck in this coming Fall and the wonders our Universe brings us.
